GATES

In South Australia there are a number of different gate materials and designs in common use, ranging from BRUSH,   CEDAR,   TASMANIAN OAK,   TUBULAR,   WROUGHT IRON,   'COLORBOND', and  HERITAGE WIRE.  Frames for timber gates can vary from steel to timber while latching and hingeing mechanisms can also vary from ball bearing (tough hinge) to pad hinges or rollers (automatic sliding gates).  The most common types of gates used in conjunction with brush fencing are; cedar, tubular and brush gates.

1.    BRUSH GATES                                                                                                 Back

Update: July 2006 - these can now be made from machine made brush panels and are much more durable.

Brush driveway and pedestrian gates are difficult to build and quite heavy to operate and unless they are well built can fall apart quite easily.  They differ from conventional timber gates in that they have a large gap between the style of the gate and the gate post to accommodate the brush gate-frame and post rolls.  They are hinged from a gudgeon on the bottom of the gate style and an adjustable sleeve hinge at the top.

2.    CEDAR GATES                                                                                                Back

Western Red Cedar gates are popular in Adelaide and used frequently in conjunction with brush fencing.

Either steel framed of timber framed gates can be ordered and are used.   We have found that the timber frame joints and the hinge fixings tend to loosen with age and we therefore recommend the steel framed cedar gate option.  The cost of steel or timber framing is about the same.

Cedar gates are usually hung from 75mmx75mm powder coated galvanised steel gate posts, using twisted ring latches and 'tuff' hinges.  An allowance of a 10mm gap on each side of the gate is usually allowed and the use of a cedar stop fixed to the latch post is recommended to prevent the latch breaking.

Gates are also fixed using one post and a wall latch, but latches should always be fixed at least 50mm from any wall corner to prevent damage to the brickwork

Sunlander Outdoor Products make a very high quality cedar gate, both steel and timber framed and their brochure is included below.  Adelaide Brush supplies and fits Sunlander gates and also works in conjunction with Sunlander in fitting fencing and gate posts where the client is dealing direct.

6.    HERITAGE WIRE  GATES                                                                                                Back

Twisted wire 'heritage' style fencing is again being erected on timber framing and skirting board and looks quite good when new.  Hopefully the wire treatment will not require the periodic painting and paint build-up characteristic of the very old fences one used to see a few years ago.
